The US Department of Homeland Security is seeking a contractor to manage a government air group that will be used for deportations, voluntary migrant returns, medical evacuations, and crisis missions.

According to Bloomberg, the fleet is expected to include seven Boeing 737-700 aircraft or similar planes, as well as two long-range Gulfstream G650ER/C-37B jets.

At present, Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) mainly uses charter aircraft from private companies. But, according to procurement documents, Washington wants the new structure to be able to operate around the clock and carry out flights both within the US and abroad, Bild reports. The contractor will be required to provide crews, technical support, medical personnel, and aircraft maintenance.

Earlier, the Department of Homeland Security said that having its own fleet would help speed up deportations and save the budget up to $279 million per year. According to Bloomberg, the authorities are also considering a model with a single base or a network of airports following the pattern of major airlines.
