The administration of US President Donald Trump intends to promote at the UN General Assembly an international declaration on freedom of speech that would conflict with European Union rules for internet platforms. This was reported by Politico, which reviewed the as yet unpublished draft document.

According to the draft, statements could not be punished as “disinformation,” “false information,” or “hate speech” unless they directly incite violence, Bild reports. In addition, platforms would not be required to independently fact-check and remove such content. This affects provisions of the European Digital Services Act, which obliges large platforms to combat disinformation and election interference.

Washington has already begun circulating the draft to other states and wants to secure its signing on the sidelines of the UN General Assembly in September. European Parliament member Alexandra Geese of the Greens called the initiative “theater” and a “smokescreen,” though some European officials fear that Trump may use it to try to influence other EU laws as well.
