The Dutch government announced today that, starting September 22, it will impose a ban on imports of goods from Palestinian territories under occupation by Israeli settlers, the Guardian reports.

The Netherlands will join Ireland, Belgium, and Spain, adding to the number of European Union countries that have introduced restrictions on trade with territories occupied by Israeli settlers.

Across the 27-member bloc, calls are growing louder for EU-wide restrictions because of Israel’s military actions in Gaza and the rise in violence in the occupied territories, although a number of EU members are still showing restraint.

Israel’s occupation of the Palestinian territories is recognized as illegal under international law.

“With the proposed measures, the Netherlands reaffirms its commitment to fulfilling its international legal obligation not to assist this unlawful situation,” the Dutch Foreign Ministry said.
