U.S. President Donald Trump expressed skepticism about the prospects of possible talks with Iran on ending the war.

“I’ll tell you honestly: they are desperate to meet. But until they are ready for substantive dialogue, we have no interest in that meeting,” Trump told reporters.

According to him, during backchannel contacts, Iranian officials made it clear that they are “desperately seeking a meeting to try to stop everything, because their forces are being routed.”

The remarks came as Iran and the United States stepped up mutual strikes following the collapse of an interim ceasefire agreement. Speaking at the White House alongside Lebanese President Michel Aoun, the U.S. president said that American forces are “destroying” Iran’s military capabilities “on a scale that nobody thought possible.”

“They actually managed to let something slip through in Jordan. If there had been different operators there, that would not have happened, unfortunately,” Trump added, without specifying whom exactly he meant by “different operators.”
