US intelligence is investigating Russia’s possible involvement in Iran’s strikes on CIA facilities in the Middle East, four Reuters sources familiar with the inquiry said. According to them, investigators are examining whether Moscow may have provided Tehran with targeting intelligence or technology that increased the accuracy of the drones.

In March, the CIA station at the US Embassy in Saudi Arabia and another site in eastern Iraq were attacked. In total, according to the publication’s sources, “more than one but fewer than ten” CIA facilities were struck; their exact number and locations have not been disclosed. Russia likely played a role in target selection, an official familiar with an internal analytical memo by the intelligence agency of a Western country said.

The strike on the diplomatic mission in Saudi Arabia caused no casualties, but intelligence officials believe that Russian-upgraded Shahed drones were used in the attack: one drone breached the embassy’s outer wall, and a second flew inside through the opening and exploded. According to the sources, Russia supplied Iran with the Kometa-M satellite navigation system, which significantly improves the accuracy of the Shahed-136 and is better protected against electronic warfare. The Wall Street Journal previously reported this, although the Kremlin called the information “fake.”

Intelligence analysts are also examining whether Iran used Russian targeting data in the attack on the US Embassy in Riyadh. One possibility is that the diplomatic mission itself was the intended target and the CIA unit located there was hit accidentally. However, some analysts concluded that only a few countries besides Russia have both the capability and the interest to use such sensitive intelligence to carry out strikes on US facilities.

Concerns that Russia may be helping Iran with targeting intensified over the weekend after a strike on an air base in Jordan hit army barracks and killed two American service members. According to the sources, the apparent focus on CIA facilities may indicate that Moscow is prepared to go beyond ordinary military-technical support for Tehran and directly assist in undermining US operations in the region.
