Only 6% of UK residents are willing to voluntarily join the armed forces if the country comes under a large-scale attack. Sky News reported this, citing a poll conducted by the research company YouGov.

Another 14% of Britons are ready to take up arms if they are conscripted. Seventeen percent of respondents said they would refuse to fight under any circumstances. In addition, 52% of those surveyed said they would not be eligible for military service due to poor health or old age. Another 17% of poll participants were undecided.

The study also showed that more than half of Britons (51%) do not believe the kingdom will face a large-scale attack in the next decade. Only 29% considered such an attack likely, while another 20% of respondents were undecided.

In addition, 53% of those surveyed said they do not trust the country’s armed forces. By contrast, 38% said they do. The share of those who had not decided on their position was 9%.

Also, 57% of respondents considered the British government’s defense spending insufficient. About 17% of poll participants described the current level of military spending as adequate. Another 6% of those surveyed considered current spending excessively high. The rest were unable to give a clear answer. More than half of respondents opposed increasing the military budget through higher taxes or cuts to social programs.

Residents of the United Kingdom named climate change as the main threat. A total of 2,300 people took part in the study.
