French President Emmanuel Macron said that the country had asked the European Union to activate the EU Civil Protection Mechanism due to large-scale wildfires.
According to the French leader, the situation remains particularly difficult in the Gironde department. As part of European assistance, France will receive additional resources: two Canadair aircraft from Croatia, two Air Tractor aircraft from Portugal, as well as two heavy Black Hawk helicopters from the Czech Republic and Slovakia.
Earlier it was reported that about 20,000 people had been evacuated due to the fire in Gironde. Another approximately 400 residents were forced to leave their homes because of a wildfire in the Var department in southern France.
