Bangladesh President Mohammed Shahabuddin Chuppu intends to submit his resignation on Friday, July 24. Reuters reported this, citing a source.

According to the agency, the 76-year-old head of state has already informed Prime Minister Tarique Rahman of his decision.

Under the law, the resignation must be accepted by Parliament Speaker Hafiz Uddin Ahmed after he returns from Thailand, where he is undergoing medical treatment. He is expected to arrive in Dhaka on Friday.

Shahabuddin has held the post of president since April 2023. After Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina resigned amid mass student protests in 2024, the country’s interim government was headed by Nobel Peace Prize laureate Muhammad Yunus.

Last December, Shahabuddin told Reuters that he wanted to resign because he felt humiliated by the actions of the interim government.
