On the instructions of Romania’s foreign minister, the Ambassador of the Russian Federation to Bucharest was summoned to the headquarters of the Ministry of Foreign Affairs. This was stated in a statement by Romania’s Foreign Ministry.

“The summons was a firm response to repeated violations of Romania’s airspace between July 24 and 26, 2026, during which the Romanian armed forces shot down three drones that had illegally entered the country’s airspace.

The Russian diplomat was shown fragments of a drone destroyed on Romanian territory, whose origin, as confirmed by the prosecutor’s office, is Russian.

During the meeting, the Romanian side expressed a strong protest against these illegal and irresponsible actions. It was emphasized that it is absolutely unacceptable for the Russian Federation to continue violating Romania’s airspace, which is also the airspace of NATO and the European Union. The Romanian side stressed that the Russian Federation bears sole responsibility for these serious incidents and for the deterioration of the regional security situation.

During the meeting, the Russian ambassador was handed an official note informing him of the decision to declare a member of the Russian Federation’s mission in Bucharest persona non grata and requiring that person to leave Romanian territory within 5 days.

In addition, the Ministry of Foreign Affairs recalled Romania’s ambassador to the Russian Federation to Bucharest for consultations. Romania will continue to closely coordinate its actions with its NATO and EU allies and partners, remaining firmly committed to taking all necessary measures to protect national security and its citizens,” the Romanian Foreign Ministry noted.
