The participation of the Collective Security Treaty Organization (CSTO) in the conflict around Nagorno-Karabakh was impossible, since even Armenia itself did not recognize this territory. This was stated by Russian Foreign Ministry spokeswoman Maria Zakharova, RIA Novosti reports.
“There was a situation with Armenia, which seemed to be saying: ‘Let’s activate the CSTO mechanism.’ But essentially — with regard to whom and what? That territory, Nagorno-Karabakh, which Armenia itself, unfortunately or fortunately — that is not my question, that is for them, for Yerevan — did not recognize either as its own or as independent,” she noted.
Zakharova emphasized that under such conditions, the CSTO mechanism could not be activated.
