Mercedes-Benz is preparing the return of an open-top version of the iconic G-Class SUV, Autocar reports.

Nearly ten years after it was discontinued, the convertible has once again been spotted undergoing road tests.

In the published images, the vehicle is shown with the soft top lowered. When folded, the fabric roof occupies the space where the standard G-Class has its luggage compartment.

The technical specifications of the new model have not yet been disclosed. However, the prototype received side exhaust pipes, indicating an AMG version. The regular Mercedes-AMG G63 is equipped with a 4.0-liter twin-turbocharged gasoline V8 producing 577 horsepower.

The official premiere date has not yet been announced, but given that the vehicle is already undergoing road testing and is based on the current-generation G-Class, its debut is expected in the coming months.

The price of the convertible is expected to be significantly higher than that of the standard models, which start at around $175,000.

Open-top versions of the G-Class have been produced since the model’s very beginning. The first two-door convertible with a short wheelbase debuted in 1979 and remained in production until 2013.

In 2017, Mercedes-Benz also introduced the ultra-luxurious Mercedes-Maybach G650 Landaulet. The vehicle was equipped with a 6.0-liter twin-turbocharged gasoline V12 producing 621 horsepower and was built on the basis of the G63 4x4² SUV. Only 99 units were produced.

The model received a hard roof over the front section of the cabin, a folding soft top for rear passengers, two separate rear seats, and was priced at around $810,000.
