A bipartisan group of U.S. senators on Tuesday announced that they had reached an agreement on a long-awaited bill that would allow President Donald Trump to impose additional restrictions on major buyers of Russian energy products, as well as on Iran, Bloomberg reports.
Trump had previously expressed support for the initiative, which was actively promoted by the late Senator Lindsey Graham. A procedural vote on the bill is scheduled for late Tuesday evening.
The document provides for an expansion of the U.S. administration’s tools to pressure countries that continue to purchase Russian energy resources, and it could also intensify sanctions pressure on Iran.
