Mercedes-Benz has introduced a new generation of its GLA compact crossover, which is part of the brand’s updated model range, Autocar reports.

Company boss Ola Källenius insisted that it is "better in all dimensions" than its big-selling predecessor.

The third-generation GLA is built on the new MMA platform, which is also used in the CLA sedan and the seven-seat GLB SUV. For the first time, electric and hybrid versions are combined in one model range. The electric GLA effectively replaces the previous EQA.

The new crossover is distinguished by a more unique design, with retro elements at the front. Mercedes notes that the main goal was to make the car more dynamic. According to Ola Källenius, the GLA's side view resembles a "sporty city SUV" while maintaining its compact dimensions.

The car is significantly larger than its predecessor. Its length has increased by 14.3 cm to 456.5 cm, and the wheelbase has increased to 279 cm. This has increased the interior space for both front and rear passengers. At the same time, the roof has been lowered by 2 cm, while the rear track has been widened.

The luggage compartment volume is 410 liters, and the electric version has an additional 107-liter front compartment.

The interior is designed in the style of the latest Mercedes-Benz models: the dashboard is completely focused on digital technology. As an additional option, the MBUX Superscreen is available—a widescreen display with three screens that occupy almost the entire width of the cabin.

The new GLA has the MB.OS operating system, developed in collaboration with Mercedes-Benz, and includes leading computing technologies. It supports voice control, with artificial intelligence, and advanced driver assistance systems.

The electric version of the GLA will be offered in three power levels. The base GLA 200 will have a 221 hp electric engine and a 58 kWh battery. The GLA 250+ will produce 268 hp, while the all-wheel drive, the flagship GLA 350 will have 349 hp. Both versions are equipped with an 85 kWh battery.

The most efficient version will have a maximum range of up to 657 km. Thanks to its 800-volt electrical architecture, the car can be charged at high-power charging stations at a speed of up to 320 kW.

A hybrid version will appear early next year. It will have a 1.5-liter turbocharged gasoline engine, which will be supplemented by a 30-horsepower electric engine integrated into an eight-speed automatic transmission. Externally, the hybrid will be practically identical to the electric version.

In the UK, the price of the new Mercedes-Benz GLA, as expected, will start from around 45,000 pounds sterling. The car will be available in four versions, including the sporty AMG Line and AMG Plus versions.
