Six Jewish residents of Israel were detained early Sunday morning after an alleged attack on the entrance to the Saint James Monastery of the Armenian Patriarchate of Jerusalem.

The incident took place in the Armenian Quarter of Jerusalem’s Old City and has become another wake-up call for attacks on Jerusalem’s historic Armenian community, according to The Armenian Report. As per reporter Kegham Balian, a member of the “Save the Armenian Quarter of Jerusalem” movement, a group of men gathered at the entrance to the monastery at approximately 1am and repeatedly spat on its grounds. Balian filmed the incident and posted the footage. The video shows the group of people standing near the entrance to the monastery.

According to local sources, police have detained six suspects following the incident. The circumstances of the incident and the possible motives of the participants are being clarified. The Armenian Quarter of Jerusalem is one of the four historic districts of the Old City, along with the Jewish, Muslim, and Christian quarters.

The Armenian community has lived there for centuries, and the Saint James Monastery is considered one of the most important spiritual centers of Armenian Christianity outside of Armenia.

The incident occurred against the backdrop of ongoing tensions around the Armenian Quarter, where disputes over rights to the local Armenian community’s territories and the preservation of historical Armenian heritage have escalated in recent years.
