A proposal to set up a detention center in Armenia for illegal immigrants from European Union (EU) member states has not been submitted to Yerevan, and such a matter has not been discussed with the Armenian side. The spokesperson for the Armenian foreign ministry, Ani Badalyan, stated this in response to reports that at the EU Council meeting on Tuesday, Italy will submit for discussion the matter of setting up detention centers in a number of countries, including Armenia, for illegal immigrants in the EU.
“No such proposal was made to us [i.e. Armenia], no such matter was discussed with us,” Ani Badalyan noted.
As reported earlier, Euronews wrote on Monday that at the EU Council meeting on Tuesday, Italian Interior Minister Matteo Piantedosi will submit a proposal to set up, in a number of countries, detention centers for illegal immigrants in the European Union.
