Bulgaria’s Foreign Minister Velislava Petrova has summoned Ukrainian Ambassador Olesya Ilashchuk for a meeting after a drone crashed on Bulgarian territory near the border with Romania. The talks will take place on Monday, as the Ukrainian ambassador is currently not in Bulgaria, the BTA news agency reported, citing the country’s foreign ministry.

The incident occurred on Saturday at about 8:10 a.m. local time. According to the Bulgarian authorities, the drone entered the country’s airspace from Romania and exploded about 100 meters from the border. The crash site is located about 200 meters from the former border crossing between Bulgaria and Romania near Kardam and one kilometer from a compressor station on the Trans-Balkan gas pipeline.

After a preliminary analysis of the wreckage, Bulgaria’s Defense Ministry said the drone was most likely a Maya decoy drone. The ministry noted that such devices are widely used by the Armed Forces of Ukraine. At the same time, the Bulgarian authorities do not currently believe the incident was deliberate.

Bulgarian Prime Minister Rumen Radev said the drone crossed the Bulgarian border and exploded on the country’s territory.

Investigative and procedural actions are continuing at the scene. A group from the anti-terrorism unit of the Main Directorate of Gendarmerie, Special Operations and Counterterrorism of Bulgaria’s Interior Ministry has been involved in the investigation.
