The Syrian Ministry of Foreign Affairs and Expatriates announced that an agreement had been reached on the future status of the Russian military bases in Khmeimim and Tartus.

As the Information and Communication Directorate of the Syrian Foreign Ministry told SANA, the decision was the result of a year and a half of negotiations and intensive consultations conducted by the country’s foreign policy agency.

Following the talks, the parties reached a memorandum of understanding defining the main parameters of future relations between Syria and Russia, including the issue of the two Russian bases.

At the same time, the statement does not disclose the specific terms of the agreement or the future status of the facilities in Khmeimim and Tartus.
