Ecuadorian diplomat and former Foreign Minister of Ecuador Ivonne Baki announced her candidacy for the post of UN secretary-general. Her official nomination was submitted to the UN General Assembly by the Kingdom of Tonga.

Baki thanked King Tupou VI of Tonga, Prime Minister Lord Fakafanua, Foreign Minister and Crown Prince Tupoutoʻa ʻUlukalala, as well as Tonga’s permanent representative to the UN, Vaini Tōnē, for their support.

In a statement on the social media platform X, Baki noted that she has experience serving as Ecuador’s foreign minister, president of the Andean Parliament, and Ecuador’s ambassador representing the country on four continents. According to her, she also took part in mediating the conclusion of a peace agreement between two UN member states.

“I am ready to help renew the founding promise of the UN Charter — to save succeeding generations from the scourge of war,” Baki said.

She emphasized that she intends to work toward improving the organization’s effectiveness and shifting the focus from procedures to concrete and measurable results for the UN’s 193 member states and the people of the world.

Baki also said she is ready to hold consultations with UN member states, the General Assembly, and the Security Council as part of her campaign for the post of the tenth UN secretary-general.
