The US State Department has approved the possible sale of up to four KC-46A aerial refueling aircraft and related equipment to Qatar for up to $4.5 billion.

According to a statement from the State Department, the possible deal under the Foreign Military Sale program provides for the supply of up to four KC-46A aerial refueling aircraft, eight PW4062 turbofan engines, as well as radar warning receivers, laser transmitters, and other equipment.

The US State Department said that this deal will strengthen Qatar's strategic role in ensuring regional security, but it "will not alter the basic military balance in the region."
