The official indictment filed against the second president of Armenia, Robert Kocharyan, is related to the ratification of government decisions during his presidency, but the document itself raises serious doubts from a legal point of view, Kocharyan's attorney Aram Orbelyan told reporters Tuesday.

The defense attorney emphasized that the qualification of Kocharyan's actions contains fundamental legal flaws.

"At the moment, we have an official indictment document, about which many questions arise, including from the point of view of the existence of the very substance of the crime. We are presented with episodes related to the ratification of government decisions of previous years. The defense records problems not only in the justification, but also in the very logic of the text," Orbelyan noted.

Regarding the question of whether the ongoing investigations may be related to the political statements by the authorities in the National Assembly, the lawyer called for not rushing to draw conclusions before the completion of all procedures.

“We are assessing what is happening in its entirety. It is possible that these actions are directly linked to political statements, maybe not, but I will not speak at the level of assumptions. Investigative actions continue with respect to each person separately. Robert Kocharyan has been detained to be brought to court. And as soon as we complete the priority procedural actions, the [legal] defense team will hold a separate [press] briefing,” Orbelyan concluded.

Earlier, Armenian News-NEWS.am reported that today at around 7am, law enforcement officers raided the house of opposition MP Levon Kocharyan, while his father, second President of Armenia Robert Kocharyan, was taken by investigative bodies to the Anti-Corruption Committee. Later, it became known that Robert Kocharyan and his eldest son, Sedrak Kocharyan, were detained.

In addition, also early this morning, tax authorities of Armenia sealed the Yerevan office of Toyota.

Investigative and procedural actions are being carried out at Orange Fitness club, Play City entertainment center, and in the directors' homes within the framework of criminal proceedings. The Kocharyan family has shares in these companies.

Armenian Prime Minister Nikol Pashinyan on Monday had instructed the law enforcement to deprive second President Robert Kocharyan and third President Serzh Sargsyan of their property.
