Armenia is closer to the European Union (EU) as never before, European Commission spokesperson Markus Lammert stated during a press briefing. According to him, the first EU-Armenia summit held in Yerevan was a success.

Also, he positively assessed the cooperation within the framework of the Stability and Growth Pact, the European Peace Facility, and partnership missions. Lammert emphasized that Armenia has already taken the first step towards the EU by adopting the draft law on the launch of its EU accession process, and called it an important symbolic step.

He recalled that EU membership implies a clear process and requires an official application from a candidate country. They are already working towards Armenia's rapprochement with the EU through transport and energy ties, trade, and other sectors, Lammert noted.

European Commission chief spokesperson Paula Pinho, in turn, stated that the EU is following the ongoing processes in Armenia with great interest. Pinho assured that European Commission President Ursula von der Leyen supports the position of Armenian citizens regarding the EU.

Prime Minister Nikol Pashinyan on Monday announced that Armenia intends to submit an application for EU membership in the near future.
