Armenia's second President Robert Kocharyan underwent heart surgery two weeks ago. This was announced to reporters on Tuesday by Anna Grigoryan, head of the opposition "Armenia" Faction in parliament, as she commented on the information that the former president had felt ill after being detained and an ambulance was called for him.
According to Grigoryan, information about the surgical intervention had not been previously made public.
"About two weeks ago, President Kocharyan underwent heart surgery and is currently in the hospital. This fact had not been previously made public. But today, when an ‘ambulance’ was called for him amid investigative actions and being detained, the issue of his [health] condition has become particularly acute. Despite health problems, political persecution against him continues," Grigoryan noted.
We previously reported that second President Robert Kocharyan and his eldest son, Sedrak, were detained and taken to the Anti-Corruption Committee today as part of a criminal case being examined by the committee.
Also, searches were conducted in the home of Robert Kocharyan's youngest son, Levon Kocharyan, a member of the opposition "Armenia" Faction in parliament, and in companies belonging to the Kocharyan family.
