The European Commission of the European Union (EU) has developed and will present in September a wide-ranging reform of the EU enlargement policy, which includes the abolition of member states’ veto power on the admission of new states to the EU, Bloomberg reported.

The European Commission is preparing a deep reform of the EU enlargement process. It will present its proposals to EU countries and the European Parliament in late September. The draft includes everything from reviewing the reforms required for EU accession to using a qualified majority instead of unanimity in decision-making to avoid blockages, the news agency noted.

The reform includes also the introduction of the principle of phased integration of new countries into the EU and the possibility of limiting their rights after membership.

Approval of the reform will require a unanimous decision by all 27 European Union countries.
