Baku and Yerevan are working to develop mutual trade, expand its range, and create new land transport links after the end of the long-standing conflict, Azerbaijani President Ilham Aliyev said in a speech in Bishkek, the capital of Kyrgyzstan.

According to him, Azerbaijan and Armenia “put an end to the conflict that lasted more than 30 years” more than a year ago by initialing the text of the peace agreement.

“Thus, the South Caucasus region, which was a zone of long-standing conflicts, is turning into a zone of peace,” the Azerbaijani president added.

Aliyev noted that Azerbaijan is already supplying oil products as well as ensuring the transit of cargo to Armenia from third countries through its territory.

“Together with Armenia, we [i.e. Azerbaijan] are working to increase the amount of mutual trade, expand its range, and create new land transport links,” he said.

In his speech, Aliyev touched also upon the UN Security Council resolutions adopted in 1993 regarding the Nagorno-Karabakh conflict. According to him, the four resolutions were implemented only 30 years later. At the same time, the Azerbaijani president stated that, in his opinion, the UN did not play any role in their implementation.

“Azerbaijan itself has fully restored its sovereignty and territorial integrity. The implementation of the UN Security Council resolutions in a short time requires the development of appropriate mechanisms,” Aliyev noted.

He expressed the view that the creation of such mechanisms could contribute to raising the standing of the UN and strengthening the role of the organization in the settlement of international conflicts.

In addition, Aliyev stressed that Azerbaijan intends to continue to support the principle of multilateralism in international relations.
