Today is Artsakh (Nagorno-Karabakh) Independence Day anniversary.

On September 2, 1991, Artsakh declared its independence from the Soviet Union.

Three months later, on December 10, 1991, just a few days before the official collapse of the Soviet Union, a referendum was held in Nagorno-Karabakh, during which 99.89 percent of its population voted in favor of full independence from Azerbaijan.

The following elections elected the Nagorno-Karabakh parliament, which formed the first government.

But Artsakh was de-Armenianized in September 2023, when, right before the eyes of Russian peacekeepers, Azerbaijani forces attacked Artsakh, which was already left without the help of Armenia. As a result, around 100,000 Artsakh Armenians left their homeland and crossed the Hakari Bridge into Armenia.
