Nissan is set to revive the "Pixo" name for its new compact electric car that will become the most affordable model in the Japanese automaker's European electric vehicle (EV) lineup, Autocar reports.

The car's unveiling is scheduled for September 23. Positioned below the Micra, the new model is designed primarily for city driving. The new EV belongs to the A-segment and is based on the Renault Twingo platform. Like the French model, it will be manufactured by Renault in France.

The introduction of the Pixo is part of an agreement between the two companies involving the joint development and production of several models. Notably, the current Nissan Micra was also created based on a Renault vehicle—specifically, it is a rebadged version of the Renault 5. Nissan has not yet revealed the Pixo's technical specifications, but they are expected to be similar to those of the Twingo.

The vehicle may feature a front-mounted 80-horsepower electric engine and a 27.5 kWh battery. Its estimated range is around 250 km. In terms of price, the Pixo will likely also be close to its French counterpart; the base model is expected to start at around £17,000. The manufacturer has already released a brief teaser of the new model and promises a vehicle designed for modern city life.

According to Nissan, it will combine compact dimensions, intuitive technology, and the brand's signature design. The carmaker had previously hinted that it would choose an existing name for the new model, with "Wave" mentioned as a possible option. The name "Pixo" has a history in Europe.

From 2009 to 2013, Nissan sold a car by that name in the UK, which was a rebadged version of the Indian Suzuki Alto. At the time, the Pixo was one of the cheapest new cars on the British market, with prices starting at £5,995. By all indications, the new Pixo will also feature retro design elements inspired by Nissan's city cars from the 1980s.

This is suggested by the style of the released teaser, which draws on the aesthetic of retro arcade video games. Upon its launch, the new Pixo will become the entry-level model in Nissan's European EV lineup, which already includes the Micra, the new Leaf, and the larger Ariya.
