An increase in drug detection statistics has been observed in Armenia in recent times. Deputy Minister of Internal Affairs of Armenia, Armen Ghazaryan, stated this during the discussion of the matter of ratifying the agreement on the procedure for organizing and implementing international controlled supplies by the competent bodies of the member states of the Commonwealth of Independent States at Friday’s meeting of the Standing Committee on Defense and Security of the National Assembly of Armenia.

"A significant circumstance is the detection of a larger amount of drugs right at the border [of Armenia]. If we look at the statistics of recent years, we will see that it is growing year by year. In general, this is a global trend, and we can also explain it by [the fact] that cooperation between law enforcement agencies has become more effective. There is also an objective factor of latency here. We cannot say whether the detection of drugs is the result of good work or simply their illegal circulation has increased," said the deputy minister of internal affairs of Armenia.

He added that this can be attributed to a change in strategy, too.

“In the last two years, the [Armenian] police have focused on detecting and preventing larger drug shipments right at the border,” Ghazaryan said.
