The Zhoghovurd newspaper of the Republic of Armenia (RA) writes as follows, in particular: Zhoghovurd daily had sent an inquiry to RA Prime Minister Nikol Pashinyan, trying to find out whether the alarms about possible torture and inhuman treatment of Armenian prisoners held in Azerbaijan were discussed during the meeting with Azerbaijani President Ilham Aliyev in Bishkek.

Zhoghovurd had asked the prime minister whether this specific information was raised during the meeting with Aliyev, what response the Azerbaijani president gave, why the Armenian prisoners have not been returned to this day, and whether the RA government is going to demand unhindered access to them by independent international organizations and doctors.

However, the RA Ministry of Foreign Affairs [(MFA)] responded to the inquiry addressed to the prime minister, essentially not addressing each of the seven raised questions separately.

The MFA response notes: “Work is ongoing to resolve the issues of the Armenian prisoners held in Baku.”

At the same time, the ministry makes a reference to the prime minister’s statement made at a briefing with reporters on September 5, quoting: “The topic is on the agenda, he cannot provide details, because publicity on the given topic cannot be beneficial in any way.”

It turns out that the key questions of the Zhoghovurd’s inquiry—specific questions about possible torture of the [Armenian] prisoners [in Azerbaijan]—have remained unanswered in the official response.
