Iranian Foreign Minister Abbas Araghchi has asked the US authorities for protection during his stay in New York to attend the UN General Assembly session, and the US State Department has agreed to provide him with Diplomatic Security Service personnel.

Axios journalist Barak Ravid reported this on X, and posted a respective State Department document dated September 18.

According to Ravid, the Iranian side has sent a request to ensure Araghchi’s security during his visit to the US.

After assessing the possible threats, the State Department decided to provide the Iranian minister with protection through the Diplomatic Security Service, a unit that provides security for US diplomats and high-ranking foreign representatives in the US.

The State Department's September 18 document confirms the receipt of a diplomatic note requesting protection and the US decision to provide appropriate protection.

Araghchi is in New York to attend the events of the 81st session of the UN General Assembly. His visit comes amid ongoing tensions between Iran and the US.
