Starting from Tuesday, Russia has tightened the rules on cash national currency rubles’ exports to Armenia and several other countries in the region.

According to a new decree by Russian President Vladimir Putin, individuals are prohibited from exporting more than 1 million rubles from Russia to Armenia, Belarus, Kazakhstan, Kyrgyzstan, as well as Azerbaijan, Tajikistan, and Uzbekistan, reports The Moscow Times. For legal entities and individual entrepreneurs, however, this restriction applies regardless of the amount.

In case of violation of this decision, an individual may be subject to confiscation of the amount exceeding 1 million rubles, while organizations or individual entrepreneurs—the entire amount of cash ruble exported.

An exception is provided for passengers who export the ruble through international airports designated by the Russian government and can confirm with bank documents that the full amount has been withdrawn from their bank account.

Back in April, Russia banned individuals from exporting cash Russian rubles more than the equivalent of $100,000 to other EAEU countries. The new limit of 1 million rubles, however, means a more than eight-fold reduction in this allowable amount compared to the previous threshold.
