The more than ten-year mission of the US-led international coalition fighting the Islamic State terrorist group in Iraq is coming to an end, Al Arabiya reports.

Baghdad and Washington had agreed in 2024 to wind down the coalition’s mission by September 30, 2026.

After that, its troops withdrew gradually from bases across Iraq, restricting their presence to the autonomous northern Kurdistan region.

Despite this, Baghdad had expressed a desire to maintain bilateral defense cooperation, while, according to The National, the leadership of Iraqi Kurdistan had considered the withdrawal of coalition forces from Iraq premature.

This mission was launched in 2014.
