Russian state corporation Rosatom is ready to use all its available technologies and capabilities to implement the project to make safe the territory of the former Nairit chemical plant in Armenia.
This was reported to TASS by the Russian Environmental Operator (REO), a Rosatom enterprise. “Rosatom possesses all the technologies and capabilities necessary to eliminate the most complex objects of accumulated ecological damage, the foci of possible ecological disasters in the future, and is ready to use them to solve a variety of problems, including the project to bring the territory of the former Nairit chemical plant in Armenia to a safe state,” REO reported.
“The matter of Rosatom’s possible participation in solving the problems of the former Nairit chemical plant has been discussed since 2022. The facility is an extremely complex industrial site with accumulated chemical substances and waste, located in the vicinity of residential buildings.
Complex facilities require complex work: site study, technology development, safe management of hazardous substances, and long-term control,” REO added. In 2023, the company, at the request of Armenian partners, conducted a site study and inventory of accumulated waste at its own expense.
The results of the study and recommendations for further work were presented to the Armenian side. The fact that Rosatom continues its work in Armenia within the framework of the Nairit project was announced by Rosatom director general Alexey Likhachev in late September, during a meeting with Russian President Vladimir Putin.
Rosatom is ready to continue work in this regard, relying on the experience accumulated in hazardous waste management, elimination of accumulated ecological damage, and reclamation of complex industrial areas, the state corporation confirmed to TASS.
Currently, Rosatom’s aforesaid enterprise is participating in the process of selecting a contractor for the preparation of a feasibility study for bringing the Nairit industrial site to a safe state.
