A specially protected natural area “Hrazdan Gorge” will be created in Yerevan. The relevant decision was made at Tuesday’s session of the Yerevan Council of Elders.

The work to grant the Hrazdan Gorge a special environmental status was launched in 2022.

About a quarter of the 33 species registered in the Red Book of plants of Armenia and found in its capital, Yerevan, grow in the Hrazdan Gorge. In addition, new species of plants under threat of extinction are discovered there on a regular basis, which further emphasizes the importance of the biodiversity of the Hrazdan Gorge and the urgency of its preservation.

It was noted that hotels and buildings, including apartment buildings, will not be built in the “Hrazdan Gorge” specially protected natural area.

Yerevan Deputy Mayor Armen Pambukhchyan announced that the fate of the restaurants and cafes already built in the Hrazdan Gorge will be decided later, after discussions.
