UN Secretary General Antonio Guterres will visit Armenia’s capital, Yerevan, on Thursday and Friday to participate in high-level events to be held within the framework of 17th Conference of the Parties to the UN Convention on Biological Diversity (COP17). During the visit, he will meet with Armenian Prime Minister Nikol Pashinyan, stated Stephane Dujarric, Spokesman for the UN Secretary General.
The Leaders' Summit on Biodiversity will be held in Yerevan on Friday. It will bring together heads of state and government, heads of international organizations, scientists, and other stakeholders to discuss measures to protect nature and accelerate the implementation of global commitments in this regard.
The main conference of COP17 is scheduled for October 19-30. Participants will discuss the implementation of global goals for biodiversity conservation, including measures to protect ecosystems and restore natural resources.
The aforesaid meeting between Guterres and Pashinyan will be a continuation of their contacts on the sidelines of the UN General Assembly session in September. At that time, the parties had discussed preparations for COP17, strengthening peace between Armenia and Azerbaijan, and developing regional cooperation.
