The decision on the pretrial detention of the second President of Armenia, Robert Kocharyan, will be appealed in the Court of Cassation, attorney Aram Orbelyan announced during a press conference on Wednesday.

The attorney informed that the Court of Appeal had denied the appeal against the pretrial detention in the same wording as hundreds of similar appeals, that is, without detailed explanation.

In this regard, Orbelyan recalled that Robert Kocharyan is accused of fulfilling the duties stipulated by the constitution. Moreover, in order to “fit” into the long-expired statute of limitations, the investigation “attached” to the case an episode involving third parties and a transaction that has no connection with either Robert Kocharyan or his son Sedrak.

Also, the lawyer noted that 60 investigators are investigating the case, although ten would have been enough, taking into account that it is about a part of the case that has been under investigation since 2018, and it is assumed that everything should have already been investigated, but now there are small “fragments” left. And in any case, there is no need to detain Robert Kocharyan, Orbelyan argued. In this context, the lawyer reminded of the relevant articles of the Criminal Code of Armenia on illegal imprisonment.

Orbelyan added that after his recent surgery, the former president of Armenia needs to undergo a medical examination, in connection with which a request will be submitted to the penitentiary service. There are no special complaints, just an examination is planned, the lawyer added.
