Turkish President Abdullah Gul visited the Chicago Tribune newspaper editorial after the NATO Summit. Among various issues, he also touched upon denial of the Armenian Genocide by the Turkish government.

According to the Turkish Criminal Code, it is a crime to claim that the killings of 1.5 million Armenians in 1915 had ever happened. However, criticizing the bill, which criminalizes denial of the Genocide in France, Gul said that ‘freedom of speech is the basis for all freedoms.’

As a matter of fact, the Turkish President claims that killings of the Armenians were not the same as Holocaust. After all, Gul alleges the Turks were victims and not the Armenians in the fight for historical memory.
