Mercedes-Benz is developing a scaled-down version of its G-Class SUV, which will be designed for different buyers and will not become a direct replacement for its full-size model, Motor 1reports.

The unveiling of this car, judging by the statements of the company's leaders, is expected around 2028. Mercedes-AMG CEO Stefan Weckbach said that this compact SUV will focus on a separate segment of buyers, and not on traditional fans of the large G-Class. According to the company's idea, the novelty will make SUVs with this brand more affordable, while keeping the original model at the top of the range.

At the same time, Mercedes-Benz promises to preserve the recognizable features of its family and good off-road characteristics. Mercedes-Benz CEO Ola Källenius had earlier announced that this car will have serious off-road capabilities.

However, the compact model will not repeat the design and capabilities of the full-size G-Class, which is undergoing tests; in particular, in the Schöckl test mountain in Austria where the brand puts every G through its paces.

During development, special attention is paid to the geometry of the suspension, wheel sizes, and axle output—characteristics that largely determine the car's ability to overcome unevenness and difficult terrain. The compact G-Class will be offered both with an internal combustion engine and in a fully electric version. The company came to this decision when North American dealers insisted on the need for a gasoline version along with an electric car.

Among the proposed solutions are a turbocharged four-cylinder gasoline engine and an electric powertrain with two engines and all-wheel drive. Mercedes-Benz has not yet confirmed the specific characteristics of the power units. Disguised prototypes of this novelty have already been seen during tests.

According to automotive publications, it may be manufactured in Hungary, and not at the German plant, where the full-size G-Class is made. Thus, Mercedes-Benz intends to expand its G-Class family on the account of a more compact model, which will retain the characteristic design and off-road character, but will be designed for buyers with different requirements.
