Azerbaijan does not demand to change the constitution of Armenia, but it is positing a precondition for signing a peace treaty. Armenian Minister of Foreign Affairs and International Trade Mirzoyan stated this while answering questions from MPs at Wednesday’s meeting of the Standing Committee on Foreign Relations of the National Assembly of Armenia.

The meeting discussed the draft on ratification of the framework agreement on strategic cooperation between Armenia and the US on the Trump Route for International Peace and Prosperity (TRIPP) regional transport project.

“There is no demand from Azerbaijan for Armenia to change the constitution… Azerbaijan is not demanding, but publicly declaring that they have shown will, initialed the [peace] document, assumed an obligation, but will not sign the peace treaty until Armenia changes its main law [i.e. the constitution,]” said Mirzoyan.

According to him, one should distinguish between the words “demand” and “precondition.”
