Aram Orbelyan, attorney for Armenia’s second president Robert Kocharyan, gave a short interview to reporters before Thursday’s court hearing.

The court is considering the motion to extend the pretrial detention of the former president for another two months.

The lawyer reiterated that the charge against Kocharyan is completely groundless and more reminiscent of an artistic fiction made with arbitrary conclusions.

This criminal "case" does not set the task of identifying the origin of the funds; it is about the former president being accused of fulfilling his constitutional duties.

"They claim that some of the government decisions he ratified [while serving as president] do not meet the requirements of the law, and he signed them out of personal interests," the attorney said, adding that Robert Kocharyan had no choice.

Accordingly, under the Armenian constitution in force at the time, decisions were signed by the prime minister and ratified by the president.
