The Zhoghovurd newspaper of Armenia writes as follows, in particular: The periodic shootings and the tragic events recorded as a result of them in the [Armenian] republic have prompted law enforcement agencies to develop new mechanisms for regulating the circulation of weapons [in Armenia]. In particular, legislative amendments to tighten control over the uninhibited sale of weapons are being discussed.
Yesterday, in an interview with the Zhoghovurd daily, Minister of Internal Affairs Arpine Sargsyan touched upon the cases of resolving matters with the use of weapons and the periodic shootings in the capital [Yerevan] and other settlements of the republic. The minister noted that she sees a problem in the field of the uninhibited sale of weapons, and in the near future the Ministry of Internal Affairs will come up with a package of amendments to the law on the regulation of the circulation of weapons.
The goal of the expected initiative, in essence, is to tighten control over the sale and circulation of weapons [in Armenia]. What specific restrictions will be proposed and what new requirements will be introduced in the process of acquiring weapons [in the country] will become clear after the publicizing of the legislative package.
It is noteworthy that this is not the first legislative initiative aimed at regulating the circulation of weapons [in Armenia]; several packages of amendments in the field of weapons have already been submitted. However, the issue of armed incidents, shootings, and the tragic events resulting from them remains on the agenda.
Therefore, the main criterion for the effectiveness of the upcoming changes will not be the adoption of another bill, but the extent to which they will be able to prevent the illegal or dangerous use of weapons and reduce the number of armed incidents [in Armenian].
