YEREVAN. – Armenia’s Education and Science Minister Armen Ashotyan met, in Moscow on Thursday, with the Minister of Education and Science of the Russian Federation, Dmitry Livanov.

The ministers reconfirmed their readiness to carry out activities toward resolving the existing problems and developing the cooperation, Armenian Education and Science Ministry press service informs. 

Ashotyan spoke of the need to sign a new agreement on the activities of the Armenian-Russian (Slavonic) University in Armenia’s capital, Yerevan, and proposed to grant this institution of higher education the status of a national research university.  

Dmitry Livanov expressed a readiness to discuss this proposal and informed that Russia is interested in giving a research direction to universities.  

Armenia’s Education and Science Minister also raised the matter of teaching the Armenian language in Russia, specifically in the schools of the country’s densely-Armenian-populated cities. And, in this context, he suggested to also implement this program in two schools in Moscow.     

In his turn, Minister Livanov informed that Russia resolves such matters with the consent of the parents’ guild of the schools. He proposed to select a school and to teach Armenian along the lines of a pilot program. 

The parties also discussed the current situation with respect to, and the development prospects for, teaching Russian in Armenia. They also reflected on the question of founding a Russian college in Armenia and with the status of a high school. 

The two education and science ministers also discussed the Armenian-Russian cooperation initiatives in the CIS and European higher education areas.
