YEREVAN.- U.S. Ambassador to Armenia John Heffern is waiting for news on French Carrefour hypermarket chain’s entering the Armenian market.

“Any news? Competition brings lower prices, better selection and quality,” he tweeted, posting a photo of Carrefour banner.

Earlier, talking to Armenian News-NEWS.am, Vatche Arsene, the representative of Carrefour in Armenia, stated that he is not prepared to say when and how the company will be ready to start its operations in the country.   

State Revenue Committee Chairman Gagik Khachatryan had stated that Carrefour’s possible entry to Armenia’s market was discussed at the Government, where there was a positive mood in this respect. Khachatryan had further informed that the country’s customs agencies will pose no obstacles before the world-renowned hypermarket chain.

But the most delicate is the matter of imports, as Carrefour imports its own merchandise, and this will run counter to the interests of Armenia’s largest importers.       

Carrefour hypermarket chain has a total of 9,994 stores in 33 countries, including neighboring Georgia, and it employs 360,000 people.
