YEREVAN. – The Yerevan office of the High Commissioner for Refugees (UNHCR) has been informed about an Azerbaijani family seeking asylum in Armenia, representative of the office Anahit Hayrapetyan told Armenian News-NEWS.am.

“UNHCR is aware of the case and has been informed by the Armenian authorities from the outset,” she said.

“UNHCR has requested the authorities to process the case in line with applicable norms of international and Armenian national legislation and will monitor the proceedings in the exercise of its international protection mandate. UNHCR welcomes that the principle of non-refoulement has been respected at the border and that alternatives to detention were found.

UNHCR in line with its global policy on confidentiality does not share with the media any information on individual cases.”

Resident of Baku Javid Orujev (born in 1976), his wife and three children on Wednesday applied to the Armenian side, at Bagratashen checkpoint at Armenia-Georgia border, seeking asylum for his family.
