YEREVAN. – The investigation will determine the fate of the nearly-one-ton heroin that was found on the Iranian border.

Armenian National Security Council Secretary Arthur Baghdasaryan said the aforementioned at a press conference on Saturday.

He noted that the objective of the ongoing investigation is to determine the origin of this illegal drug and the way in which it arrived in Armenia.

“The answers to these questions will help us determine,” Baghdasaryan added.

A truck heading to Georgia was inspected on January 17 at Armenia’s Meghri customs checkpoint on the border with Iran. During the inspection of the truck, the Armenian customs officers found 927 kilograms of heroin in a secret compartment. The truck driver, Georgian citizen Avtandil Martiashvili, 61, was detained. Turkish citizen Osman Ugurlu, who is suspected of being an organizer of this major drug smuggling attempt, was later detained in Armenian capital city Yerevan. Such a large quantity of drugs was discovered for the first time in the region.
