YEREVAN. – Irrespective of whether or not Armenia joins the Customs Union (CU), there cannot be a steep inflation in Armenia.

President Serzh Sargsyan stated the aforementioned Friday, during his consultation at the Ministry of Urban Development,

Sargsyan noted the above-said with respect to the media claims on a possible rapid inflation in Armenia, once the country becomes a CU member.

In the President’s words, the prices of some products may drop and those of others may increase, but a steep inflation is ruled out.

Sargsyan once again stressed that the CU accession is in the Armenian people’s interests, and it is not solely about the economy.

The President noted that the competent authorities need to give comments if such misinformation is disseminated, and present the truth to the people.

“We already have a very high degree of freedom of the press in Armenia. The Reporters Without Borders organization recently issued its 2014 report on World Press Freedom Index, according to which Armenia is the leader in our region; this truly is a very major achievement, and this is our achievement. But this achievement also requires a new work method, additional efforts from us all.

“Freedom of the press also means that certain groups of people may present any good deed as bad. [But] we have to be very active, so we may be able to bring our decisions to our community, also have public support, and contact,” President Serzh Sargsyan said, in particular.
