YEREVAN. – It is quite possible that, along with the warming weather, Ukraine-like events may take place in Armenia, Modus Vivendi Center Director, political scientist Ara Papyan said at a press conference on Thursday. 

In his words, when the Armenian authorities made their choice in favor of the Russian-led Customs Union (CU), the West sent a clear message to Armenia that, by making this choice, they are evading the adverse processes in the future.   
“The West understood that Armenia’s government policy is aimed at the prevention of adverse processes. Therefore the West needs to resort to some adverse processes and announce that it, too, can contribute to the negative phenomena.      

“We already see this in the European organizations, on the Nagorno-Karabakh issue, and we still will have more adverse reactions,” Papyan noted. 

He added that the West will show that, despite the CU accession, Armenia will lose in the Karabakh issue.  

In the analyst’s conviction, it is apparent that neither the Armenian parliament nor the political authorities express the will of the people.   

“Let’s not forget that once Armenia becomes a CU member, many products will become more expensive, [and] this year is going to be very difficult for the country in terms of economy. If the Karabakh issue was a priority for the people fifteen years ago, today [it is] the economic issues,” Ara Papyan stressed. 

Following the talks that were held on September 3, 2013 in Moscow between Armenian and Russian Presidents Serzh Sargsyan and Vladimir Putin, Sargsyan had announced that Armenia plans to join the Customs Union and subsequently engage in the formation of the Eurasian Economic Union. In December 2013, the “road map” for Armenia’s accession to the Customs Union was adopted. And in January of this year, the Government of Armenia approved the action plan for the implementation of this “road map.” Aside from Russia, Belarus and Kazakhstan likewise are members in the Customs Union.
