YEREVAN. – The US ambassador to Azerbaijan should answer the question about the arrest of Azerbaijani journalist Rauf Mirkadirov. 

US Ambassador to Armenia John Heffern told the aforementioned to Armenian News-NEWS.am. 

He confirmed yet again that the US, together with Armenia and Azerbaijan, works towards the settlement of the Nagorno-Karabakh conflict, and by way of a peaceful resolution.   

The prominent Azerbaijani journalist was arrested on April 19, and on charges of espionage. He is accused of working with Armenia’s special services. The Prosecutor’s Office claims he had met with the representatives of Armenian intelligence and carried out their instructions.

In the statement on Tuesday, the US Embassy in Azerbaijan said they are “worried over assumptions that Mirkadirov was arrested either for criticism against Azerbaijani government or his participation in people-to-people contacts within Karabakh peace process.”

“The contacts within public diplomacy contribute to peaceful settlement of Karabakh conflict,” the Embassy also said.
