YEREVAN. – Zhamanak daily spoke with US Ambassador to Armenia John Heffern, and below is an excerpt from the interview.

“Please give an assessment on Armenian-American relations after September 3.

“I’ve been here as an ambassador for about three years, and during this time the US has always supported Armenia’s European integration path. [But] in September [2013], the President [of Armenia] announced that Armenia will join the [Russia-led] Customs Union. We respect that decision. [But] I myself don’t know why Armenia changed its mind not to go along the road to EU and went in another direction.

“I am talking now about the US. We tried to offer to the [Armenian] government, the companies further work on such matters towards the implementation of which they have a political will. We await from the government, the country’s president some specific signals on [their] willingness to work on these issues. And if there are such signals, we are ready to work, if the government, the leadership of Armenia has a political will.”
