YEREVAN. – Armenian parliament speaker Galust Sahakyan met with the Chairman of Russia's Federation Council Valentina Matviyenko to discuss Armenia-Russia strategic relations.

Valentina Matviyenko assured that Russia values strategic partnership between the states based on tradition of friendship, mutual assistance and good neighborly ties.

The head of Russian parliament's upper house underscored importance of strengthening economic ties, including cooperation on energy, investments, high-tech and defense areas. The official noted necessity to develop inter-regional cooperation, adding that over 70 entities are showing their interest.

“We intend to fully support the expansion of our cooperation at interregional level. Armenia's membership to the Eurasian Economic Union will raise bilateral partnership to a new level,” Matviyenko added.

The chairman of Russian parliament emphasized close coordination and cooperation in various international parliamentary platforms, such as the CIS, CSTO,  BSEC PA and others.

The head of Russian parliament's upper house mentioned several anniversaries related to common history that the people of Russia and Armenia will mark: 100th anniversary of the First World War and the 70th anniversary of the Victory in the Great Patriotic War.

Valentina Matviyenko and Galust Sahakyan drew importance of the 100th anniversary of the Armenian Genocide, and discussed the format of  participation in the events.
