YEREVAN. – The Armenian government decision on releasing additional water from Lake Sevan will result in a ten-centimeter reduction in the water level, as compared to the previous year.

“For Sustainable Human Development” NGO Director, environmentalist Karine Danielyan stated the aforesaid at a press conference on Monday.

As per Danielyan, this decision is a serious blow to Lake Sevan. She stressed that owing to the rise in the lake’s water level, the biological and chemical indicators have improved.

“The seismologists likewise have expressed concern by the government’s decision, since the water-level fluctuations may cause seismic activity.

“Sevan needs to be treated not only as a lake, but also as an ecosystem,” the environmentalist noted.

Karine Danielyan added that a decrease in Lake Sevan’s water level will impact its quality, too, as the lake will start to grow old.
